A CRISP CASED 18-BORE FLINTLOCK BY WILLIAM MILLS

8inch sighted browned damascus barrels with chevron engraved muzzles, chevron engraved case colour hardened gold lined breeches with platinum touch holes, border and scroll engraved stepped and bolted locks with rain-proof pans and roller frizzens, signed W. MILLS, border and scroll engraved French cocks, the top jaws decorated with garlands, half stocked with border and scroll engraved steel mounts, the trigger guard decorated with a shield, chequered wooden butt, the white metal escutcheon decorated with the crest of Lieutenant General The Earl of Dalhousie GCB, swivel ramrod, contained in its blue felt lined mahogany case, the outside of the lid with brass carrying handle and escutcheon bearing owner's name and crest, the inside of the lid with maker's trade label, complete with commensurate accessories, the two lidded compartments with bone lifters. A very crisp gun with good amounts of original finish, the right breech stamped H123, one patch of pitting, the case generally sound but with restorations to the lid and some damage. George Ramsay the 9th Earl of Dalhousie served in Martinique where he was wounded in 1795, the Irish Rebellion, the Flanders campaign, the Egyptian campaign, the Peninsular War and the Battle of the Pyrenees. Latterly he was Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, Governor General of Canada and Commander in Chief of India.
