A RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY MAORI FIGHTING STICK OR QUARTER STAFF HANI

with carved stylised prominent blind face and protruding tongue, thick haft extending downwards towards a broad swollen butt, 153cm long, 7.3cm at the base. Fine age patina overall. Of the many Hani offered for sale in the ethnographical catalogues of W. O. Oldman, only two are recorded with blind faces, one in his catalogues of 1907, and another in 1910 (catalogue 84, item 17).
