OF CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE INTEREST - THE SWORD OF SERGEANT MAJOR "OLD BAGS" HARRISON 8TH HUSSARS

89.5cm curved fullered blade etched with a foliate panel to one side, this containing a scroll banner bearing the name H. HARRISON, regulation steel stirrup hilt, leather covered ribbed wooden grip, worn, contained in its steel scabbard marked 8H over HH. Salt and pepper pitting to the scabbard and hilt. Troop Sergeant-Major Henry Harrison, served 15th September 1831 to 19th June 1857, rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade on 25th October 1854. After the Charge he was returning up the valley leading a riderless horse when he came across Private Pennington of the 11th Hussars to whom he gave the horse. Pennington was then able to regain the British lines. Harrison was known as "Old Bags" due to his habit of wearing his overalls loose.
